Croton Plant Care Guide

Bold, vibrant, and full of personality—Crotons are the perfect statement plant! Learn how to keep their colorful foliage thriving with our essential care guide.

About Crotons

Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) are tropical shrubs known for their dazzling foliage, which comes in shades of red, orange, yellow, and green. Native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, these plants thrive in warm, humid environments. With the right care, a croton can be a long-lasting and stunning addition to your indoor or outdoor space.

Croton Care Basics

☀️ Light

  • Crotons need bright, indirect light to maintain their vibrant colors.

  • Direct sun for a few hours is okay, but too much can scorch their leaves.

  • If your croton's colors fade, it likely needs more light!

💧 Water

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

  • Use filtered or distilled water if your tap water is high in chlorine, which crotons dislike.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in 65-80°F (18-27°C).

  • Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Crotons love humidity—mist occasionally or use a humidity tray to prevent dry, crispy leaves.

🌱 Soil & Potting

  • Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich mix. Our Tropical Aroid Mix works great!

  • A mix containing coco coir, perlite, and pine bark will ensure aeration and prevent root rot.

  • Repot every 2-3 years or when roots outgrow the pot.
